Stuff Builds Characters

I revamped out my office this weekend, exchanging one desk for another. My dog loves it because she can take over every inch of the middle of my office floor (and is doing so right now. And snoring). But this changeover got me thinking about a kind of quiz I do each time I start brainstorming characters for my series. Since I’m a week away from the Henery Press release of Counterfeit Conspiracies and Marked Masters, I thought I’d spend a few minutes today talking about how “stuff” builds Laurel Beacham’s character. Laurel Beacham is likely to keep…things that fit in her huge purse and help her get into and out of trouble on a daily basis as she attempts to keep art masterpieces from disappearing into the “ether.” In her public persona, she’s more likely to use her cell phone to connect with someone who can provide the “open sesame” she needs Read more…

I’ve Been Bad–I Know

My posts have been meager lately, I know, but I’m on a deadline for the third book in the Bodies of Art series–now officially titled Abstract Aliases. Plus, I’ve been doing all of the final proofing to get both Counterfeit Conspiracies and Marked Masters back to my Henery Press editor so the books will be ready for their re-debut and release to Net Gallery readers next month. The first two books are on-tap for a February 2016 release, but are available now in preorder, and will go to review services next month. YAY! But there are a number of new events happening soon. I’m going to try to post about the newest this Friday (yes, Black Friday)–it all depends on when I get the final info–so y’all will be ready for the big event on Cyber Monday. I’m participating in this fun FB event that will be a moveable giving-op, rather than a selling Read more…

Exciting Day Around Here! Book Cover Reveals!

I’m pretty good at keeping secrets when I have to–But I don’t really like to. Especially when it involves new book covers.  I’ve been really good at keeping  these covers secret–but now that my publisher, Henery Press, has made them public, I get to show them off as well! A couple of months ago, I signed a contract with Henery Press for my Bodies of Art series. They’re releasing the first two books in a few months, and they’ve contracted for three more books to come out in the next few years. The last Friday in July, my lovely editor, Erin, sent me a request from the art department, asking if I had anything in particular I’d like to see incorporated into the covers. Well, let me tell you–I may write art mysteries, but I know my creativity is firmly with words–not creating pictures. So I have no problem letting Read more…

Decisions…Decisions

To keep up with all my ideas, I have my “working notebooks” and keep one on each new book, and file all series notebooks together in my office. I scribble lines I want my characters to use, ideas on where they should go and what they should wear, I take notes on news programs that cover topics related to the places and events my character(s) will see. It’s all grist for the mill, you understand. Yes, I could do all of this in a digital file and have it wherever I go, but there’s just something about brainstorming with a pen and paper that a notebook computer simply can’t provide. But one things I do always take advantage of online is to collect pictures on my Pinterest boards at https://www.pinterest.com/ritterames/ For some reason WordPress doesn’t want to imbed this address correctly today as a link, so I figured the whole thing Read more…

Bargain & Giveaway Day

Short and sweet post to tell you I’m giving away a signed copy of Marked Masters  today at Dru’s Book Musing blog, and I let Nico do all the talking since Laurel never lets him 🙂 So go check out the blog and leave a comment if you want to enter. Also, Counterfeit Conspiracies is included in a great new anthology titled International Cozy Mysteries that includes full-length books by me (of course), Sibel Hodge, Maria Grazia Swan, and Ellie Ashe. To look at this sweet cover you’d never imagine gun play and murder is involved in the stories, would you? But even sweeter than the cover is the price the publisher set for the release–only 99 cents for now, but it will go to the regular $6.99 soon. So grab the bargain while you can! It’s on sale at all booksellers, but here’s the Amazon link where you can find more details on the anthology (and I’ll Read more…

Picture Me Organized

I never imagined when I penned my first story that I would eventually have to balance my writing work with such daily tasks as comb research sites and flag them for later use, file tax records, discover marketing options, network with advertisers, find fabulous clothes for my characters to wear, locate spy and tech stuff for my characters to use, figure out group activities for my characters’ children…and still find a way to write and have some fun in the middle of this publishing circus. One social media invention that helps me keep on top of all my treasured data is Pinterest. Yes, Pinterest. I know, a lot of people say it’s a time waster, but for me the site is an organizing sensation. Here’s why– Since I write two mystery series, I can have multiple boards about the endless number of things that relate to each series. I have fabulous Read more…

We’re Going Into the Home Stretch…

Do you know how writer’s whine? Well, let me tell you I’ve been happily whining up a storm lately because I’m having such a difficult time staying focused. But all the promos are starting on Marked Masters, the second book in my Bodies of Art Mysteries, and that makes me think of Florida and Florence, Italy–the two places Laurel & Jack focus their own attention in the book. The picture at the right shows the Duomo complex in Florence (you can see a hint of the exquisite dome on the far right edge) and the Giotto Bell Tower in the background plays a key role in the book. So… I’m having some difficulty staying in one point of view each day, and my cozy deadline is looming, and I have to keep reminding myself to get out of Laurel’s smart mouth POV and back into Kate’s much nicer and more dedicated one. I’m over at A Girl and Her eBooks with a quick post about how I use Pinterest as an author, especially for my Bodies of Art Mysteries–the second book in that series, Marked Masters, will be released March 2nd.
